Tower of Fantasy

The room was a large empty office space, which had once been the main reception area of an old building. A few stained glass windows were now blown out of place, providing dark shadows and light to match what felt like an even darker shadow in the centre of the wall. They all lay on a plain of red brick that sat side by side with another similar brick wall, both appearing at least three times wider than it should have. It seemed as if they were never built the same way - or at all; some were taller while others were thinner - though the bricks had clearly seen their share of remodelling over many years.

There was nothing else to be made of this wall; it had probably been built for something other, even worse and more dangerous. As it stood there were a lot of blank walls in the shape of maps laid neatly on one of them, showing off various places in what appeared to be the Middle East or maybe Asia - though, the only thing visible at face value was a map of a small desert village in western Iraq, it has no signs of how much time has passed there, nor what is beyond it. No sign that anything has changed. Only what has not changed.

It was odd to look around these parts of the world without seeing anything that could tell you otherwise about its inhabitants, other than what would be found here. Even the floors were painted white. In the corner at the far end there was nothing but floor to ceiling shelves, many stacks of books that might sell a million copies but the rest was filled with boxes and crates - a very strange looking combination of things; it all looked so familiar, even from where I came from. Nothing on show there had ever belonged to anyone else, except, perhaps, when someone wanted to burn it down? That had happened before too. Most of what was on display there either did not belong to anyone anymore, or if it did was not very well hidden. To my right, behind this stack of boxes and crates, two large rusted metal chairs stretched up against a wall. At the front there was a big desk where everyone sat when they came to talk to me, but to my left there wasn't much to get into; just a simple black rectangular shaped desk. It had always been where I sat whenever I went to talk to a representative at this company's HQ. Now it was only a flat surface; bare and simple. But this desk was still beautiful enough to make someone want to spend a bit extra time on it, especially, to give someone a picture of the person who sat in the chair. There was also a massive picture of the person sitting opposite that. She was quite close to the person facing her so both people had a good idea of each other's faces. Both had blue eyes. Her hair was brown. And he had a huge forehead. This was his desk. He hadn't been in our offices for long then...

""Come sit here,"

a voice called from across the table. "We will talk." The person sat down next to him. "I was expecting someone to come for my meeting." Said she as she reached out for my hand. It was nice to feel real emotion again. But not the kind we feel. Not the kind that makes us feel bad afterwards. We're supposed to cry every little detail about ourselves to every imaginary character we've invented." She added, still smiling. My face started to twist into an expression of horror. "I remember one day, it was winter, and we decided to build a big tower.

Everyone was happy, until a friend arrived who told us we wouldn't be able to complete the project because it would've only cost a year. Then they asked if we'd need money and we said no. So they asked if a person from our firm had any ideas, and we thought someone else might come along. They told us they heard we had such amazing architects, but didn't think they'd be able to finish it." The woman paused for a moment and took a deep breath before continuing. "We started working on something else.

By that evening the man on our company's staff was here and he told us the most amazing architect they'd never met would like to design the structure we wanted. We got together with the guy and made copies on papers. One of them brought a book that had a drawing of it all. And we made plans and they put them outside on the sidewalk and said it was going to be worth millions." Tears dropped from her cheeks as she remembered how beautiful the skyscraper now looked.

"It was finished.

Two weeks later, the architect from our business came to see it. And he was like, 'Wow'. It had grown so much smaller and smaller. Every room inside was smaller and smaller. And then it became clear to us the whole thing was actually our building. The roof was completely missing and we didn't know what we were doing. We didn't have any money and we had no time... so we called that architect back to tell him it was perfect. But it was perfect! The sky never looked blue again." I couldn't stop myself. It seemed just as if the sunlight were slowly turning blue before them, the room turned into something far sweeter. A calm world. Everything in it was bright and brilliant. Until it all died down then.

"I don't think anything can ever compare to that," said one of us as we wiped away a tear from my cheek, looking around the space. Just a tiny speck, no bigger than the tip of the blade on a knife had become. Our minds raced. Were they talking? How are they telling us that? What was happening? Suddenly all of our worlds seemed very small... I took a deep breath and held it in. There was a loud click from the desk, something soft under my fingertips. When I looked between the tables of the desk on my right, there was a single strand of hair sitting there. An item that wasn't mine; I pulled it from it and found my own hands. They were all dyed blonde and had already faded into the pink and yellow of the dirt in the bottom of the pot plant the woman had planted on hers. I wiped and wiped until the dirt turned to mud and then I threw the piece into them all at once.

"Stop it!" said the girl standing on the other side of the desk. "You ruined everything. You destroyed all of your work for yourself." My heart sank. My mother never saw the damage on my desk. Instead she brought it to me after I had given birth right before she got married and we started having kids. And then she gave me my new desk. Which, for her, was absolutely awful. As soon as she left my desk, it began to disappear. Not a single inch of its colour came through the paint, just a smattering of colours. For a few moments there was nothing but water in the air. Then... it felt warm and wonderful. Then it felt different.

I was scared, my insides ached for something, something deep inside of me. Something hard and unbreakable. But nothing was there. And then... everything returned. Everything. All things. Maybe in that space a few years back was the largest castle I had seen in all of fantasy. Each stone was different, each soldier was unique and had an aura that spoke to them. I watched and admired it for a couple hours. Then I walked around and wondered what the rest of the world looked like. What a wonder that place was to my imagination. Surely we can't leave it like that.

People should come and go to visit, but why didn't they use the tower as a tourist attraction? Or something for those brave enough to climb a ladder or two up to the top? Why'd they let it fall apart into pieces? Where would they live? Would the land that used to be in there be as grand and prosperous as everywhere else they stayed? If so, how did they know? Surely, they knew that it was just lost? "If you're sure you still want it," I said softly, "Then go find it. Don't worry about the rest." Those words were exactly what brought me to the spot in the middle of the city where the skyscrapers disappeared.

I walked along the streets, dodging piles of rubbish, throwing things away so I could reach my destination. From around the corner, two girls ran past me. They were running fast, with the same enthusiasm, their arms pumping the air. Their feet flew as they sprinted across the street to join their friends a moment later. Behind them, hundreds of other children and teenagers rushed towards them. After them, thousands of adults, even soldiers, parents and grandparents followed.

People were busy on their phones. Shouting. Screaming. Running, shouting, and crying all at once. Everywhere it had been beautiful days a whole year ago were destroyed. Nobody liked it. Though nobody was being paid to watch. Adults weren't paying to take pictures. Kids' parents and teachers were taking photos of the scenery, but none of these people were paying attention. The sight of these lives I'd seen with my eyes in the future was shocking, I don't understand why it's sad.

Children now were playing on the ground, surrounded by objects, the grass growing around every stray branch they left and the tattered leaves and flowers scattered on the pavement. Everything looked grey and empty, as if they had stepped back into an unknown realm without anyone to guide them. It was hard to pick out the ones who looked happy compared to everyone else

After a mile, I finally stopped. I didn't want to see those kids playing. Someone had to guide them back and tell them what was best. Maybe we could make them believe in a better life. My desk had fallen apart too, yet again. Perhaps the last time I was really sad in my entire
