Human activities and food chain

human activities and food chain in ecosystem

In an ecosystem, each member of a food chain is important. Otherwise, the whole system gets
disturbed. Some of the human activities badly
destroy this balance, such as urbanization, pollution and deforestation. Let's study their impact.

1. Urbanization

Urbanization brings about an increase in the human population of cities or the expansion of cities. At present, the rate of urbanization is increasing very rapidly. The high rate of increasing population in an area is associated with many problems such as shortage of land for houses and other social infrastructures, e.g. schools, hospitals, etc., along with a high rate of waste production.

The attempts to resolve these problems lead to degradation of the environment, giving rise to many other issues such as deforestation and pollution.

2. Deforestation

To manage the urban settlement and to fulfil the food requirements, forests are cut down rapidly. Deforestation is a life risk for its inhabitants resulting in the loss of many animals and plants. Just observe the following:

When there are no trees, herbivores will die, causing a decrease in the carnivorus population. In this way, the whole community will get disturbed.

3. Pollution

Addition of any unwanted substances to the environment is termed as pollution. These harmful materials are called pollutants. They can also be formed from human activity,Such as factory-made garbage or flow. Pollutants caused the quality of air, water, and land.

An increase in population also results in an increase in fuel consumption and the production of more waste.  The disposal of waste becomes a problem. Proper disposal requires manpower and money. Therefore, industrialists dispose of waste into nearby water bodies and landfills to save the money. As a result, water becomes polluted posing threat to aquatic life and marine food chain gets disturbed.

Improper disposal of waste (domestic and industrial) on land makes it polluted as well. It is, therefore, concluded that the most dreadful human activity for the ecosystem is urbanization which leads to other dangerous activities such as industrialization, deforestation and pollution. All these acts degrade the natural ecosystem by disturbing the food chains.

Conservation of ecosystem

An ecosystem can be conserved by following the given rules.

The only practical step to protect the ecosystem is to conserve natural habitats. It can be done by:

  1. Controlling population
  2. Plant as many trees as possible and avoid deforestation.
  3. Stop dumping waste into water bodies and landfills. Alternatively, make the waste hazard free before dumping.

The other major step is to stop unnecessary hunting of the most important predators such as domestic lizards that eat insects, beautiful sparrows and beetles that kill harmful insects, etc.

The conservation of ecosystem ensures the human survival indirectly. Our little attempts can cause significant So, everyone must play their role in the betterment and protection of the ecosystem.
