APPLICATIONS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

Biotechnology has applied in four major area that include health care (medical), crop production (agriculture), environmental uses and other products.

For example, one application of biotechnology is the direct use of microbes for the manufacture of organic products (examples include beer and milk products).

Biotechnology is also used to recycle and treat waste, clean up sites contaminated by industrial activities (bio-remediation)

Biotechnology and Agriculture

  • Increasing crop yields is the most obvious application of modern biotechnology in agriculture. Many genetic traits  associated with productions

  • (e.g. enhanced growth) is controlled by a large number of genes, each of which has a minimal effect on the overall productivity.

  • Proteins in food may be modified to increase their nutritional qualities.

  • Beans and grain proteins can be replaced  to provide amino acids needed to human for a balanced diet.

  • Biotechnology improves the flavor, structure and food appearance.

  • Most of the current commercial applications of modern biotechnology agriculture has resulted in reducing the use of agro chemicals such as insecticides and pesticides.

Biotechnology and Environment

  • Bio-technology is being used to improve engineering and integration, especially in trying to find sustainable ways to clear the microorganism environment. End of ecological and era of environmental institutions have an absolute requirement to promote durable development of a low-environmental effects of an oxym society.

  • Biological processes play an important role in eliminating diseases and Bio-Technology is taking advantage of amazing catabolic stability of microorganisms to change such compounds.

  • Marine environments are especially vulnerable since oil spills of coastal regions and the open sea are poorly containable and improvement is difficult. In addition to pollution through human activities, millions of tons of petroleum oil entering marine system is eliminated by the hydrocarbon degrading activities of microbial communities.

Biotechnology and medicine

  • Modern biotechnology is often associated with the use of genetically altered micro-organisms such as bacteria or yeast for the production of substances like synthetic human insulin or antibiotics.

  • The first genetically engineered products was medicines, which was developed to treat human diseases. To consider, one example is the preparation of insulin by joining its gene with plasmid vector inserted into the bacterium.Insulin is used for the treatment of diabetes.

  • Another promising new biotechnology application is the development of plant-based pharmaceuticals.

  • Safer vaccines can be designed and manufactured by genetically modified organisms. These vaccines will activate the immune response without causing infection. They will be cheaper, more stable and easier to store.

  • Certain antibiotics are also the product of biotechnology obtained from some bacteria and fungi. e.g penicillin. This antibiotics are used to treat microbial infections.

The Important Role of Biotechnology in Meeting the Nutritional Needs

Biotechnology is being used for the welfare of mankind by obtaining good production and nutrition of food items.

Biotechnology is playing a vital role in meeting the nutritional needs of human population. We can enhance the food production, nutrition by making new quality (better types) of animals and plants. This can help producing large amounts of food for mankind.

Tissue culture is an important technique of biotechnology. We can get better quality crops and other plants which give more production using this technique. Thus tissue culture is playing an important role in overcoming the food shortage.

Genetic engineering is another technique which is used to produce animals with desired characters. For example, Neeli Ravi Buffalo is produced for production of milk. Likewise, Nancy sheep produce more meat. Such animals are very helpful in meeting the nutritional needs.

In short, biotechnology has a great importance in human life. We can succeed in meeting food problems by using biotechnology.
